The Area
There
are of course many activities available in this area. A good
9 hole golf course only 4 miles away at Tombeboeuf and an
18 hole course at Castelnau, just 30 minutes drive away, as
well as a number of other courses in the area.
Enjoy
the weekly street market in the Bastide town of Miramont de
Guyenne the small local town only some 4 Kilometres away.
It provides all the necessities of life with well stocked
supermarkets, bakers, butchers, cafes and other small shops. Many of the small, beautiful, local towns have markets on different days of the week.
Bergerac,
on the Dordogne River, is just 35 minutes to the north. Bergerac
airport has frequent flights to many UK airports by both Ryan Air and FlyBe.
Marmande is
35 minutes west and Villeneuve-Sur-Lot is 40 minutes to the south.
These larger towns have beautiful old town centers with shops and
markets. All have superb large supermarkets on the outskirts.
There
are many places of historical interest well worth a visit. The local Bastide
towns of Eymet, Monflanquin, Castillonnes, Villereal and the beautiful
villages of Monpazier, Issigiac (with its medieval houses and bishop’s
palace), Pujols and Penne d’Agenais with its windy streets and church
at the summit of the hill are all within easy drive.
These
Bastide towns, so characteristic of the area were constructed as new towns
in the 13th and 14th centuries, by both the English and the French when
much of the area was English before and during the 100 years war.
The Dordogne River
is very good for fishing, canoeing and other activities. There are also
many local facilities for riding, tennis and walking.
There are many interesting
places to visit for day trips. The renowned prehistoric sites in the eastern
Dordogne, the famous cave paintings at Lascaux especially, Roc St Christophe
and various old cave dwellings, and many other minor caves with wall paintings,
etc. There are also the very pretty towns of Sarlat, Domme set on top
of a hill, Roc Gageac on a cliff beside the river and St. Emilion on the
road to Bordeaux and the castles of Beynac and Biron.
